Fundraising Juanita Tupper, our Board Liaison representative, told our September meeting about the successful and enjoyable croquet tournament held by The Library's Foundation on September 19, the purpose of which was, of course, to raise funds. As always, The Friends are anxious to work with all members of The Library's "family" and expressed a desire to be invited to enter a team for next year's tournament. Congratulations to the Foundation for this enterprising event! Memorial Library Art Gallery "Along the Garden Path" is the title of this month's art exhibition featuring the work of artist Claire Stewart, a Bowen Island resident. Having worked for several years as a graphic artist, Claire has developed a highly distinctive style of her own during her recent evolution in working with watercolours. Her evocative use of colour is bold and exciting. Furnishing the inspiration for her new work and fresh techniques has been Claire's travels through Great Britain and Europe, as well as the grandeur of the scenery surrounding her home. Claire's work has recently been exhibited at the Plum Tree Gallery on Bowen Island, the Harmony Arts Festival in West Vancouver, and other Vancouver galleries. The Passing of an Era We were sad to learn of the death of Gordon Raglin, a supporter of our Library and inspirator of the History Group that met each Thursday morning in the Library until he was no longer able to carry on. His funeral was held at West Vancouver United Church on Thursday, September 9. We extend our sympathies to his widow Anna, a long time supportive member of The Friends. Mrs. Diamond Whaun, a resident of West Vancouver since 1931, died on September 19 at the age of 90 years. Her late husband was a founding member of the West Vancouver Memorial library. She and her husband, Thomas Moore Whaun, were great proponents of education for both sexes and all races. In lieu of flowers, her family asked for donations in her memory to, amongst other educational causes, "The Friends of the West Vancouver Memorial Library". Miscellany Did anyone actually tackle the summer quiz? We had great fun putting it together, but will not inflict another one on Friends unless it was enjoyed and, therefore, we would like your feed-back.
