Treasures of our Memorial Library The Laminator (Donated by The Friends) One of the most useful tools in our Library is the Laminator. This is a machine ... or, if you prefer ... an instrument, for applying a tough, semi-permanent covering of clear plastic sheet over flat surfaces such as book covers, posters and cards. It is an essential piece of equipment, the use of which contributes greatly to the length of the life of the Library's books. The Laminator purchased this summer by The Friends replaces the previous one broken down by virtually daily heavy use over the , last five years. Although vital to the operation of the Library, the proposed replacement cost was cut by the Municipality from our budget. The Friends are pleased to have been able to "come to the rescue" in providing the funding for a new, upgraded machine. Our laminator lives in the Technical Services Building, adjacent to the Library itself. In this hive of industry it is in constant demand. The laminator is, with its supporting frame, a unit of no mean size. It is, in fact, about the same shape and bulk as a small upright piano. Over previous months, the quiet music of its operation had been too often accompanied by sighs of exasperation as it had been on its last legs for far too long and the need to be replaced urgent. Its motor had to be replaced about a year ago, and it often malfunctioned, wasting plastic sheet and causing a great deal of trouble for the operator. Its increasingly constant break down resulted in time consuming and frustrating delays in getting new books onto the shelves. The Library's staff also carry out small assignments for other West Vancouver departments -such as laminating posters for the Parks Department. This work is carried out on a fee-paying basis. Obviously, though, the most heavy usage is by the Library for covering books. Our Chief Librarian and the staff involved have expressed their deep gratitude to the Friends for this vital contribution. Remembrance Day -Tuesday, November 11, 1997. The most important day in our working calendar. The Friends are responsible for providing refreshment to and hosting the reception for those attending the ceremony to honour those who sacrificed their lives for us - a responsibility of which we are proud. Last year, out of the estimated 800 people who attended the service at which 53 wreaths were laid, some 500 met afterwards in our Library to exchange reminiscences; to renew acquaintances; to warm themselves with hot tea and coffee and to view the Book of Remembrance. Arrangements for this year are well in hand. Brendan Rowell has generously agreed to look after the "physical plant" aspects - i.e. tabling, cups & saucers, urns and so forth, and Wayne Leigh-Spencer and Natalie Logan have kindly agreed to take care of the provision of refreshments. Pat Scrivener (where would we be without Pat and her telephone?) will be recruiting and scheduling volunteers, so do, please, telephone Pat to discuss timings should you wish to participate. Pat, again, very many thanks for all that you do for the Friends and for the Library. Pat Scrivener: 922- 2298
