Chief Librarian's Report Summer Reading Club Over 1,000 children signed up for this year's Summer Reading Club - a record! This programme ensures that any participating child, anywhere in the Province, either at home or on vacation, is provided with the same opportunities. Staff in Youth Services, working with associates from other libraries, make a major contribution to the design and implementation of this programme. Julia Hedley (Department Head - Youth Services) was this year's representative on our Provincial Committee. The Friends donated $300 for incentive book marks, 'fridge magnets and T-shirts worn by staff on programme days. The children are encouraged to visit with their librarians once they have read a book to discuss it with them, although (perhaps fortunately!) not all 1,000 have followed through to that extent! Ann praised the patience and constant enthusiasm shown by staff to our young patrons. Friends' Funding Ann reiterated at our September meeting the Library's thanks for our financial assistance with the Summer Reading Club and the Library User Survey. She also thanked The Friends for purchasing the new laminator, details of which are given in our "Treasures of our Library" section. In response to an earlier suggestion by Eileen de Bues, Ann tabled a "wish list" of possible purchases by The Friends for the Reference Section: ♦ Additional chairs - for each carrel - with adjustable height controls. ♦ "The Encyclopaedia of the Human Body" - a 9 volume reference set to be published next year. The first edition of this reference work is heavily and extensively used, and the revised updated edition is much needed. ♦ "The Encyclopaedia of Philosophy". A work of this nature is particularly required - and enthusiastically used - by young people who are trying to come to terms with the ethical questions of our day, such as euthanasia. The current 1967 MacMillan publication in our collection is heavily used but needs updating to include more recent information. Ann undertook to provide full details and estimated costs of these items for our consideration.
