♦ At the recent Board meeting, a Member had questioned whether the prices charged at the book sale were sufficiently high. Although it was felt that we were comfortable with an effective pricing level, the Board wished to draw our attention to this comment. ♦ The West Vancouver Archives Department had approached the Board to request possible storage space for archives, their available space having been exhausted. ♦ It was suggested to our meeting that The Friends might consider funding the purchase of a new laminator. Although the cost of approximately $5,000 for a new laminator had been included in the Chief Librarian's budget submission to the Municipality, it had been disregarded by Council. A laminator is used extensively by the Library on signs and posters and on every hard back addition to the collections. Juanita explained that the Parks and Recreation Department also used this machine on a fee paying basis. The meeting agreed to consider this request, and Juanita agreed to provide more information. A question was raised as to whether it was possible to adjust the rental user fees to other Municipal departments to depreciate the capital costs and thus provide funding for future replacements. The meeting complimented the Board on its first issue of its new publication "library Times", and expressed a keenness to regularly contribute articles. Summer Recess We will not be meeting again until September 24, and would like to take this opportunity of wishing all Friends a very happy summer. A notice will be sent in advance of the next meeting. However, the Library continues to offer much during the summer months. Next month's art exhibition features the work of two West Vancouver artists: a display of" Marquetry" by Ed Fielder, and "Fun on the West Coast" by Vern Montgomery. For 25 years Ed Fielder owned and operated Custom Millwork, where he produced high quality wood work for public buildings and private homes. Examples of his work have been installed in the early stages of our Memorial Library; St. Christopher's Church; The West Vancouver Municipal Hall; The West Vancouver Recreation Centre and the Kiwanis Seniors Housing. Since his retirement in 1979, he has continued to work with wood; carving, designing and constructing custom furniture and most often working on marquetry projects for individual commissions. In the 1980's, Vern Montgomery opened a downtown Vancouver studio doing caricatures, greeting cards and cartoons. At the age of 36, he suffered a broken blood vessel in his brain which left him with a paralysed right arm and leg and no speech - except for the word "no"! He taught himself to draw with his left hand, and now does caricatures for parties and cartoons for a real estate magazine. He works in pen and ink, acrylics and Gouache. "57 hope you like the pictures and they bring you a smile. Then S7 will have succeeded." Vern Montgomery Also, just when you thought it was safe to come out of the water, your editorial committee have devised a summer quiz! The quiz, which is enclosed with this newsletter, is not a competition, and there are no prizes - we just thought it would be interesting and enjoyable. The answers will be published in September. If this quiz proves popular, we would welcome contributors for future years. The next meeting of the Friends will be on Wednesday September 24 1997 at 7 pm in the Peters' Meeting Room Betty Neilson Joanna Knight Ted Hill
