♦ Summer Reading Club Registration began on June 16 and, in the first ten days, almost 400 children had signed up for the programme. This , year's theme is "Lost in a Book". Promotional material features a bus interior, as a result of which BC Transit is offering free advertising. Our meeting approved the funding for T-shirts, to be worn by staff on programme days, together with the costs of incentive 'fridge magnets and book marks. ♦ Library Activity - May The Library was slightly busier this May than 1996. 77,538 items were checked out. Staff responded to 8,764 questions. ♦ Budget Situation The library has sent out a press release in regard to reductions in Library hours and book budgets necessitated by the budget cuts. Mention of fire cuts was made in both The North Shore News and The Vancouver Sun. A flyer summarising the effects of the cuts is being handed out with all loans. The Board is working on the question of achieving the additional cuts needed for 1998, and will be conducting a survey of Library users before decisions are made. This survey will be held in September in order to include students' input. Treasurer's Report Ron Lucas's Report for the period May 28 to June 25, 1997, tabled at our meeting, showed expenditures of $5,045.93 for furnishings for the Library, as agreed at our May meeting and described in the June newsletter. "Lord - Thy ocean is so big and my ship so small a Breton fisherman's prayer. Memorial Library Art Gallery The Reception for June's exhibiting artist, Jane Richardson, was hosted by Elsa O'Connor and Betty O'Sullivan. Although the opportunity to entertain her guests was much appreciated by the artist, again attendance was not very high. In her report, Juanita Tupper told us that, as a result of our comments and observations in this regard, the Board would be recommending to the Visual Arts Committee that, whenever possible, the displays should feature artists from our own North Shore community. The current exhibit features two artists; the intaglio prints of William Steinberg entitled "Constructed Surroundings" and "Coastal Love Affair" by Colin Hempsall. Bill Steinberg began printmaking under the tutelage of architect / printmaker Lesley Laskay who was a student of Moholy-Nagy of the Bauhaus. His "meticulously drafted black and white images offer an enchanting blend of whimsical cartography and implausibly precarious architectual superstructures". Colin Hempsall paints, teaches painting, writes on marine subjects, teaches celestial navigation and sails "Moon Island", a 41 foot ketch he built and has sailed solo to California, Hawaii, Samoa and Tonga. He paints to express his love of the ocean.
