Friends of the Library - Newsletter May 1997 Memorial Library Foundation '97 Rainy Day Fund Campaign The 1997 Rainy Day Fund campaign is now well under way. The West Vancouver Memorial Library needs our financial support more than ever before. Provincial government cutbacks to municipalities will seriously impact our library this year and in the future. Even as we face the new reality of cuts to our budget, we are committed to maintaining the high standards of excellence of service and the acquisition of book and learning materials. This year, we do not have the luxury of funding special projects as we have done in the past There is only one special project this year .... that is to meet part of the shortfall in the books and other learning materials' budget The Writing's on the Wall! We must raise $25,000 through the Rainy Day Fund campaign to meet this commitment With your help we know we can do it Meanwhile, the Board of Trustees is striving to maximize efficiencies of day-to-day operations. As well, the Foundation is looking at other avenues of fundraising to ensure our library continues to service this community in the best possible way. Our library needs our support more than ever as we face The Writing on the Wall. We urge you to add your name to our 1997 Annual Donors' Board by donating generously to the Rainy Day Fund. Thank you for your support Judy Gosney Memorial Library Foundation Annual Campaign Chair PS Rainy Day Fund campaign literature is available in the Library or call 925 7410 for details. We asked Judy if she would kindly supply us with a history and background to the Foundation, for the benefit of our newer members especially. Judy writes as follows: "The Memorial Library Foundation of West Vancouver was established nine years ago under the chairmanship of Bob Wyckham. As a child of the Library board, its purpose is to raise and manage funds to provide for materials and special projects needed by our ever growing library. The initial impetus in 1985 for the creation of the Foundation was the growing public demand for increased library services coupled with the critical need to expand the facility. This led to the launching of the Special Edition Building Campaign in May 1989 to fund the subsequent major expansion of the library. Since this extremely successful building fund campaign, the Foundation has evolved into an important fundraising organization. The Foundation's purpose continues to be to raise and manage funds required to sustain the future health and growth of our Memorial Library..
