Treasures of our Memorial Library This outstanding artwork was woven by Anthea Mallinson of West Vancouver. She presented it as a gift to the Memorial Library late in 1994. The artist is a graduate of the tapestry department of West Dean College, Sussex, England. Her work has been exhibited in England, Canada, Japan and the USA. She has taught tapestry history and technique at Capilano College since 1988. The artist herself has enriched the library's files with details about the tapestry and tells us "it was inspired by a newspaper clipping of some years ago". "It measures 7 feet by 4.5 feet, and was woven on a high warp tapestry loom. The visible material is Swedish wool with silk highlights". The artist's initials form part of the woman's bracelet. She entitled the piece simply "Woman and Child". The Memorial Library counts itself fortunate to possess among its permanent collections a work of art with so broad an appeal, so timeless; and so universal. Memorial Library Art Gallery Sharon Christian's whimsical sense of humour and love of animals is portrayed in her work now on show in the Memorial Library Art Gallery. A native of Alberta, Sharon taught general high school art for the Calgary Public School Board from 1971 to 1977. Since then, as a full time artist, she has recorded over 1,300 original paintings, many of which have been show in public and commercial galleries from Quebec to Vancouver. Sharon tells us: "For me, art is a communication about the world as I see it...my paintings represent me, who I am, and how I think". "The Best Dressed Cow Contest" and other paintings are on display until May 4. Next month's display, which runs from May 5 to June 1, features watercolours by Jane Saborio, and is entitled "Colores"
