Newsletter Issue 107 April, 1997 Membership Welcome to two new members joining us in March: Barry Griblin Patricia Witzke Annual fees and renewal forms are being returned steadily. Again, a reminder that it is most helpful if members would include their renewal slip, noting activities of interest, with their fee. The returned forms are an important part of our record keeping process. Chief Librarian's Report Jack Mounce's report to our meeting on March 26 included the following: ♦ Internet Project Public access to the Internet was expected to commence within a few days, with two public access points in the Reference Department and one each in Adult Services and Youth Services. The Library's approach to advance group training would be developed once an awareness of needs and demand had been gained. ♦ Story House With the exception of acoustic "clouds" and Robert Florian's second mural, work on the Story House is close to completion. ♦ Musto Room This project is also close to completion. The sectional meeting table for this room, which has been purchased by the Friends, is soon to be installed. Emergency Procedures The Library has experienced some recent problems with its emergency lighting system as well as difficulties with the heating system in the old part of the building. These conditions have resulted in three false alarms, during which the building had to be evacuated. Steps are being taken to provide emergency power backup, improved systems and procedures. ♦ Circulating CD-ROM Collection This collection has been acquired and is currently being processed. An invoice for the $1,100 funding provided by the Friends will be submitted. A request was made that recognition of the Friends' support of this project, along with that of CIBC, should be displayed with the collection. ♦ Library Activity in February Following January's record circulation, February activity was down slightly from last year, partly as a result of fewer hours of service, 1996 having been a leap year. In an article in the June 1996 "Library News" regarding the upcoming Friends of The Library Book Sale, attention was drawn to the fact that the Friends' membership card admits members to the two hour preview sale at which they may make purchases before the sale is open to the general public. Our Membership Secretary felt that this article had proven successful in recruiting new members last year, and asked if a similar article could be repeated this year. Jack Mounce undertook to convey this request to Ann Goodhart, our new Chief
