Casino Licence The application for a Casino Licence was submitted in February following the election of officers and acceptance of the annual financial statement and balance sheet at January's AGM. Also required for inclusion with the application was a prioritised list of the use of proceeds from a Casino event. Following a request from Jack Mounce to departments for a possible casino project, Cheryl McGregor proposed a language learning centre comprising two computer work stations, a CD-ROM collection and other related materials at a total estimated cost of $27,600. This proposal which was subsequently endorsed by the library Board was attached to the Friends application. It should be noted that the Friends are not necessarily bound by the proposal and are free to submit an alternative. We have just learned from the BC Gaming Commission that, due to the large number of applicants for casino licences, there is a lengthy waiting period, estimated to be between 9-10 months. If our application is approved by the Commission, we will be notified of the Casino dates approximately four to six weeks in advance. On-Line with the Net West Vancouver Memorial Library goes on-line later this month! We will shortly have four computer terminal stations linked up to the World Wide Web. Two of the stations will be in the Reference Department; one in Adult Fiction and one in Youth Services. As this service is likely to be very popular, a booking procedure will be introduced. Patrons will be asked to select a 30 minute slot on a weekly sign-up sheet (unless a terminal is currently available). Sessions must be restricted to 30 minutes. Library staff will be on hand to assist. During the next couple of months, the CD-ROM circulation collection will be available on loan from the Youth Services Department. These CDs, of which we will have around 50, are currently being catalogued and processed. They have been funded by a donation of $1,100 from The Friends, together with a gift of $2,000 from CIBC. Although the CDs are primarily for young people and students, containing educational material and stories for the young, it may well be that some of us will be making our way up to the second floor! If so, the three work stations there containing encyclopaedias will provide an excellent taste of what is in store in this exciting new medium. Of course, the CD-ROM encyclopaedias on the work stations in the Reference Section and the eleven catalogue terminals in the Library are also available. Name Badges An earlier suggestion that our name badges be "upgraded" -along the lines of the Volunteers' badges - was approved. It was agreed that individual "named" badges would be produced for the association's officers, together with 25 "generic" badges to be worn by volunteer Friends at Receptions, the Book Sale, Remembrance Day, Casino Nights and so forth. They will be kept at the Library. Betty Neilson Joanna Knight Ted Hill
