Newsletter Issue 105 February, 1997 Annual General Meeting The Annual General Meeting of the Friends was held on Wednesday, January 22, at which the following reports were given: President's Report In reviewing the past year, Eileen de Bues highlighted the following points: ♦ It was a very busy year for the Friends, beginning with the reception held in February attended by about 60 people. ♦ The Friends enjoyed hosting the three monthly "Music in the Library" sessions once again during the year. ♦ The annual book sale in June was once again very successful with revenues of over $7,000. ♦ In June, the Friends regretfully bade farewell to newsletter editor Tony Scammell who returned with his family to the U.K. ♦ The monthly art exhibit receptions, and book deliveries for the home-bound are ongoing activities. ♦ The Remembrance Day reception was once again extremely busy with more that 500 cups of tea and coffee provided to the visitors to the Library. ♦ In 1996 the Friends have donated more than $14,000 on a variety of projects to the Library, including the drapes and acoustic tiles for the Peter J. Peters Room; the multi-volume Birds of North America; and a contribution to the Summer Reading Club; and to the Memorial Library Foundation. The Dictionary of Art, which was purchased in 1995, arrived last November. ♦ We have an excellent Treasurer and some very dedicated and hard working Friends. Eileen de Bues formally thanked those who had been so active in support of the Friends' activities during 1996, including Irene Caudwell for the excellent way she looked after the Friends' finances; Natalie Logan as Vice President; Marguerite Cassetta as Secretary for being so supportive; Wanda Osborne for once again orchestrating the successful book sale; Betsy Lee for her work as Membership Chair and mailer of the newsletters; Pat Scrivener for chairing the Telephone Committee; Tony Scammell for editing the newsletter until his departure in June; Betty Neilson, Joanna Knight and Ted Hill who have looked after the newsletter since September; Betty O'Sullivan for hosting the artists' receptions and Elsa O'Connor who took this over in July; and to all the Friends who cheerfully lend a hand whenever requested. Also, the silent members whose support is so important; and to our special friend, Jack Mounce, for his continuing support; as well as Lillian Chow, who is always there to lend a hand when needed
