Treasures of our Memorial Library Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of beauty, love, laughter and marriage, sprang from the foam of the sea on the shores of the beautiful island of Cyprus. The ocean nymphs were the first to discover her, cradled on a great blue wave; and they carried her down into their coral caves, where they tenderly nursed her, and taught here with the utmost care. Then they pillowed her softly on a great wave and entrusted her to the care of Zephyrus, the soft south wind, who blew a gentle breath, and wafted her to the Isle of Cyprus. (unattributed) Our own beautiful Aphrodite did not fare so well. This appealing alabaster statue, a replica of a Greek statue by Praxiteles (circa 330 BC), which has graced our Library Memorial Garden for over twenty years, was irrevocably damaged recently while being removed for repair. So, Hail and Farewell, Aphrodite. We will miss you . So, too, will Discobolus - the Discus Thrower - a replica of a work by Myron (circa 450 BC), who resides in our Memorial Library's West Wing. These two works of art came, in the 1970s, to the West Vancouver Municipality from the Eagle Harbour estate of Nicholas Kogas - creator of that spectacular headland home "The Parthenon".
