Library Attendance The meeting was pleased to learn, from Jack Mounce's report, that library activity levels for October continue to run well ahead of 1995's record totals. Musto Room Upgrade Jack Mounce also told us that The Memorial Library Foundation had now received two interior design proposals for the renovation of the Musto Room, both at considerably higher costs than the original estimate. Further information is to be accumulated. The offer of the Friends to assist with the project had been noted. Publicity The Memorial Library continues to receive media coverage. Recent articles in the North Shore News include a photograph of children with Rainy Day Umbrellas promoting the Rainy Day Fund, and one of children attending one of the popular storytime sessions. Art Displays The walls of the art gallery in our West Vancouver Memorial Library currently hold a delightful display of paintings by Gina Charles and Elaine Sills. The pictures, many of which are watercolours, will offer a pleasant sense of nostalgia and recognition to many viewers. Elaine Sills' images, often of a personal nature, provide vignettes of life with family, pets and other treasured memories. Gina Charles describes her paintings as a "breakthrough on her journey of exploration of ideas." Nature and fantasy provide much of the inspiration for her work. The current exhibition will run until January 5, 1997. Four artists will share the gallery space in January: Helen Kwok; Tsing Chow; Jenny Cheng and K.C. Chang New Arrivals The spectacular 34 volume "Dictionary of Art", funded by the Friends, has now been added to our Reference collections. A photograph publicizing this donation is expected to appear shortly in the North Shore News. The Dictionary volumes can be found under "730" in the Reference Section. Volume 34 is the index to the publication. Our November meeting agreed to a suggestion that book plates be designed by the Friends for inclusion in the Dictionary of Art volumes, and other gifts from the Friends. Nominations The November meeting of the Friends learned that a nominating committee was required to find candidates for the vacant Friends of the Library Committee positions. Betty Neilson agreed to chair the committee with Natalie Logan as the second member. Association Liaison Publicity has also been received by the Friends of the North Vancouver District Public Library, mentioned in last month's newsletter. That Library's book sale was organized by the Friends for the first time this year, netting a profit of $3,000.
