NEWSLETTER Issue 104 December, 1996 Membership Membership remains at 119. Under the revised system, renewal notices are sent, a month in advance, to those whose annual membership is due to expire. 59 renewal notices will be sent out during December. Again, a reminder to include notification of activities of interest on the returned form. Special Events At our November meeting, Eileen de Bues urged members to attend the Memorial Library's Second Annual Christmas Party on December 12, and to wear their Friends' badges. As this gathering of the Library's Staff, Volunteers, Friends, Board, Foundation and Honorary Advisory Board offers the opportunity to become more acquainted, it has been decided not to hold the traditional February reception of the Friends. Remembrance Day Included in the Chief Librarian's Report to the November meeting of the Friends was the following: On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I wish to thank our Friends of the Library for once again hosting a very successful event. Attended by an estimated 400 people, this annual reception continues to grow in popularity and has become a key part of West Vancouver's Remembrance Day observance. Treasurer's Report The Friends were delighted that Irene Caudwell had sufficiently recovered from her recent accident to attend the meeting and present her report. The Treasurer's report indicated that the total of regular funds held by the Friends is $24,815.08. There is also an amount of $1,162.40 remaining in the Casino account. Jack Mounce suggested that the balance of the existing Casino funds be spent on the support of the new circulating CD-ROM collection. Casino Recently announced cutbacks in Provincial funding to the Municipality are expected to result in substantial cuts to our Library's budget for next year. To seek additional funds, the Friends have agreed to apply for a Casino Licence. For this to be successful, we must be assured of committed participants. Usually, two nights are allotted to us, with four volunteers required for each night. Obviously, back-ups are required to cover for sickness, etc. We are, therefore, looking for twelve members who would be willing to take this on. A Committee has been convened and will be meeting in early January to take forward the application. However, it is expected that it will take several months for all arrangements to be finalized. In the meantime, please consider giving this a try. If you have never been to a casino night, you would find it very interesting. Committee members will be able to answer questions on what would be required of the participants. If you are interested in being a participant, and/or joining the Committee, call either: Joanna Knight - 925 8644 Carmina Davila - 925 6717 (PS - Participants aren't allowed to gamble!).
