One of the Treasures in our Memorial Library The Stained Glass Window This remarkable work of art is in the form of an arched "window", measuring 1.83 metres by 2.13 metres, and inscribed "To the memory of Lieut. Horace Gordon Stone, only son of Henry A. and Beatrice H. Stone of this city, who died on Active Service Dec. 15th, 1918". The picture it presents is a faithful reproduction of a painting entitled "Harmony"; the original was painted by Sir Frank Dicksee (1853-1928). In rich, romantic colours, it depicts "a romanticized interpretation of a domestic interior, and itself features a large window of stained glass behind the figures". (Elizabeth Wildine: "A History of Windows"). It was made in 1931 by a master craftsman, John Henry Dearie, of the London firm of Morris and Co., and is considered to be a work of the very highest quality. The original painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy, and brought artist Dicksee great popular success. He became president of the Academy in 1924. The painting is still displayed in the Tate Gallery. Prior to World War 11, the stained glass masterpiece stood in the Vancouver Art Gallery. In 1950, when our Memorial Library opened, the window was presented to us by Mrs. Alan Gentles, whose brother was the naval officer the work commemorates. It was first mounted in the library that same year. Since then, it has been moved several times, due to successive enlargements of the premises. Several other stained glass works by John Henry Dearie can be found in Vancouver. Memorial Library Discussion Group Many Friends enjoy attending the weekly meetings of the Discussion Group, featuring guest speakers and covering a wide range of subjects. This informal group meets on Tuesdays at 10am in the Peters Meeting Room. Details of upcoming topics can be obtained from the Library's Information Desk. Newsletter We hope you like the new newsletter format. We have had fun putting it together, and have learned a great deal in the process. It could not have been achieved without the cheerful and enthusiastic assistance of Memorial Library staff members Lillian Chow, Gabrielle Raasch and Roy Hunter, to whom we would like to express our gratitude for their time, patience and expertise. The newsletter is for the Friends about the Friends, so do, please, let us have your contributions. The next meeting of the Friends will be on: Wednesday, November 27, at 7 pm in the Peters Meeting Room Betty Neilson Joanna Knight Ted Hill
