Issue 103 November, 1996 NEWSLETTER This edition of the Newsletter is in tribute to those who died for us On yonder island, not to rise, Never to stir forth free, Far from his folks a dead lad lies That once was friends with me. Lie you easy, dream you light, And sleep you fast for aye; And luckier may you find the night Than you ever found the day. from A.E. Housman's "A Shropshire Lad" Lest we Forget On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month - Remembrance Day - a near record attendance of around 800, including some 100 Veterans, stood in silence to honour those who gave their lives in the great wars of this century.. Following the service, at which 53 wreaths were laid, those gathered to commemorate the fallen met in the Memorial Library to exchange reminiscences; to renew acquaintances; and to view the Book of Remembrance, which was on display. They enjoyed tea, coffee, juice and cookies served by members of the Friends and entertainment provided by the Ambleside Orchestra. A big "thank you" to Eileen de Bues for her overall management of the event; to Pat Scrivener, who coordinated the volunteers; to Brendan Rowell for looking after the cups, saucers & urns; to Wayne Leigh-Spencer and Natalie Logan for organising the refreshments; and to all Friends who worked so hard to host this event to commemorate those who fought for us, in whose name our Memorial Library is founded. Details of the ceremony can be found on page 4 of this newsletter. Membership Membership has now reached 119. We welcome our latest members joining this Fall, Anny Chen, Carmina Davila, Sharon Thompson and Bin Yan. Just a reminder that all members - old and new - are encouraged to attend our monthly meetings, held at 7 pm on the fourth Wednesday of the month. Members are reminded to check their membership cards for the date of expiration. Registration forms are available at the Registration Desk for completion by those whose membership has expired or is expiring this month. Please don't forget to indicate on the form activities of interest. As mentioned last month, copies of the minutes of meetings will not be sent to each member and, instead, information from the minutes will be incorporated in the newsletter. However, a copy may be collected from the Library's Administration Office, located on the second floor, weekdays between the hours of 10 am to 4 pm. In addition, copies of the previous month's minutes will be available at the current meeting. Any encouragement that Friends can give to others to join our group is requested. We need new members to join the Friends - from all age groups.
