-4 The breadth of the Dictionary's scholarship is incomparable. It covers all the visual arts - painting, sculpture, architecture, the graphic arts, industrial design, photography, and the decorative arts, mcluding jewellery, ceramics, metal-working and textiles - exhaustively examining all in the cultural contexts in which they have developed and thrived. No human culture or civilization has been omitted; all find theirrightfulplace together in this work. In addition to a re-evaluation of the Western visual arts and those of the ancient world in the light of current scholarship, close attention is given to the arts of Africa, the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, Central and East Asia, the Pacific, pre-Columbian America, and native North America.
