- 2 July Ye 3 - This morn did hear the church toll, and did fear much my dere ladie is gone. John cummen in later did tell us she died at 6 of the clocke. It greeves me much, it be a grate loss to me; for I shall miss her sweet fase and loveing wayes. Later comes carters wiffe to work, who do saye my lorde be nerely mad with greeve, and will not ett, but shut himself up with my ladies boddie and locked the doore. It be sad to die so younge, she being 24 year olde and her birthdaye the same as mine and the same age. The bell have been tolling all the day. Every boddie will miss her much, and carters wiffe do say everie boddie is in tears, she being so kind to everie one. July Ye 5 - Todaye did cum a servant from the big house, with a letter from my lord sayeing for me and John to go to the burryinge of my dere ladie; he sayeing she loveing me, he do think she would be wishing it. I do bring tears to my eyes, for indeed I did love her much and shall miss her. So tomorrow me and John to her hurrying. This be all I can write; my harte do acke badlie this night. July Ye 6 - It have rained all the daye, and in the church porch the water did cum drippe drippe from the trees; and I thought me that even the trees did crye for my dear ladies passing. All the village did stand bar headed here to show their respecks but John and me did sette in the church with the moumeres. My Lorde did look venie sad, and well he might, for he have lost a dele. Then we out to the churche yarde agen ...the bell did toll most drearlie and every boddie in teares did make all verrie misserable. After all over, we back home to get into dry thinges; which Sarah had warmeing reddie by the kitchen, fire, with a good tot of lemon punche, which we were glad to drinke, it bein such misserable wether. Then John out to see to the works, bidding me and Sarah to stay in the warm kitchen, now there be plentie to do the feeding. Then me to telling Sarah and carters wiffe of all that had been to do at the church; and they did weep much, and Sarah did show carters wiffe the cloke my dere ladie did bring her less than munthe agon. It be a good cloke, with fur inside it, and Sarah do tressure it. July Ye 12 - / have got much to be thankful for even if John do be fractious at times; I do feel that God be verrie good to me and fawoure me much, with a good home and plentie to ett and toe keep me warm and abel to rede and write. JUST FOR FUN (Reader's Digest) All Greek to Him: I was updating my résumé and at the same time decided to update my husband's too. When I reached the "post-secondary studies" on Marc's, I asked, "Honey, what were your minor and major when you did your Bachelor of Arts at the University of Ottawa?" "I doni remember, " he replied. "Why don't you check your diploma?, " I suggested. After a few moments, I heard him laughing. "There's a problem: I got my diploma printed in Latin, and I can't read it any more. " - Lisa Lèvesque - DesRosiers (Moncton, N.B.) Campus Comedy: On the first day of my class of scientific and technical writing at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, the professor warned us that 40 percent of the course would focus on grammar. The whole back row of students moaned, and one young man stood up. "I just graduated from high school, " he said. "I dont need no more grammar. " - Contributed by Lori M.
