SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT (CONTINUED) Another extract from "The Diary of a Farmer's Wife, 1796-1797." Feb. ye 21 - Today I did hay to giv John a dose of fissicke for his good, as I had feared I should. I did give him the jouce of a lemmon with a pinch of ginger, and blacke pepper, and a taste of salt; which I did make him drink after swallowing some peppercorns He did make a mighty fuss, sayen I should kill him with my messes, burnin his innards. But it always do him good. John's mother and me and Sarah hav set the best parlour to rights ready for the party this next day. Farmer Bliss and his wife be cummin, and Mistress Prue and her sister Liwy. We do like them much, they bein real ladies, their father bein the squire when he did die. Also Parson Jones and Johns friend Tom and his cozen Artie, so we shall be a party. (I be glad Parson Jones be back, so we shall not hav Ellis and his frustie madam in the church anon. I mislike her much; she do for ever rile me with her primms and prissums - albeit a nobody, her family bein only poor millers tho she do set up to be a lady.) We have set a goodly store for them. There be pyes and tartes and pastries, roast pigge meat and a great ham and apple pudden; with a goose with a goodly stuffin in his insyde to giv a flayvour and chese fresh from the vatte. John hav put a tap to the new barrel of beer, and there will be cyder and sherrie wine, and I shall bring out a bottel of my cowslip wine as well as one of the elderberrie for the ladies. So we should do verrie well. .../2
