- 3 She did tell me the ladies in London town do dye their hair, but I did see her own was the same as ever, she not bein one to follow the fashion on London town; but do look right well any way, bein a verrie sweet lady and not a bit uppish. She did like my spinette muchly and sayes it be verrie well ornamented; and did please us greatly by playin upon it with her own hands to our delight. She did go with John's mother and me to look at the pigges, and did say how well the hens did look. Then we back to the parlour where we did drink a dish of the chany tee; then she home. Sarah did go carrying a baskit of my eggs, topped with a pot of my preserved fares, which be verrie good. Sarah walks behind as becomes a decent servant wench. March ve 3 - It bein Sunday John and me to church in the morn. The sermon verrie good and the singing right heartie. Jim Beck did break a fiddel string, which did give a loud pop, and did make him look verrie red in the face when her ladieship did look up at him and smile. Did see my lady Susan when out of church, who did ask me and Johns mother to a tee drinking cum tuesdaye; which pleased us mitily, we bein much favoured. She did speak very prettie to Johns mother. March ve 4 - Sarah did tell Johns mother that she did like being my maid, she having good vittles to ett and plentie clothes to her bed. This pleasing me I did give her my blew petticoat, not wanton it to wear. March ve 6 - Yesterday we to the Lady Susan to drink tee. We did hav a verrie pleasant time, and did sit in my ladies little parlour; me and Johns mother feeling verrie welcome there. The room was verrie fine, with grand chaires and littel tables. I did see some dust in the chair legs. She did play some verrie pretty musick on her own spinette, which is bigger than mine, and a very sweet thing. Then we with her up to her bed-chamber to see her new furniture therein. Then to the tee drinking in her parlour, where her futman did wait upon us, as if we were the quality. I did take my lady a pot of my pickled strawberries, which did please her grately; she not hearing talk of such, and did say would I tell her how to do it. Which I shall write out and send her. The Lady Susan did walk a piece with us when we home, which pleased me much, we meeting divers people who did stare to see me in such fine company. When home we find Sarah with some hot punch ready, it bein verrie cold; for which I did praise her kind thought. And Johns mother did give her a penny piece. March ve 8 - After dinner did send Sarah to the big house with the receipt [recipe] for my lady how to pickle the strawberries. She gone, me to her bed-chamber to see if all be clean; which I do find verrie tidy and neat, she bein a good wench; and her bed all ready for the night, and her bed rail put ready for when she do go to bed. She soon back, verrie pleased, saying that my lady herself did speak to her verrie kind; and did thank her for her trouble, and did tell the cook to see she did have a cup of beer and sum vittels before cuming home again. She did also send her regards, and to say she did hope to see me and Johns mother when she do return from taking the waters at Bath. John coming in did here this, he saying my lady is a fine one who be worthy of our respecks, with which I do heartily agree. .../4
