NEWSLETTER No. 88 May 1995 Dear Friend of the Library, NEXT MEETING Wednesday, May 24th, 1995 at 7:00 p.m. in the Peter J. Peters Meeting Room. MEMBERSHIP There are currently 97 members including 3 renewals. After giving the matter considerable thought, it has been decided that it would be advantageous to offer 12 month memberships to anyone joining the Friends. Therefore in future memberships will be for 12 months and will be subject to renewal throughout the year. Members whose memberships are due to expire will be reminded over if necessary a 3-month period so that they can renew. ARTISTS' RECEPTION The next reception will be on May 29th from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. with artists Frances Fehler Wright and Daphne McLean in attendance. Their exhibition "Magic Moments Revisited" will continue to June 30th. CASINO NIGHTS Our thanks to those who have volunteered to be part of our two "teams" for the nights of May 24th and 25th. We wish them good luck! DATE SLIPS Those who have signed out books in the last few days may have noted the absence of date slips which have now been replaced by a small printout issued to each borrower. BOOKSALE The sale will be in the Library basement on June 24th and 25th, 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. The Friends' preview sale will be on Friday, June 23rd, between 4:30 and 6:00 p.m. CELEBRATION AND REMEMBRANCE The recent celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the end of the war in Europe in 1945 brought home to us, not only the joy and relief which victory for the Allies achieved, but also and more deeply, the horrifying loss of life in achieving it. The joy and thankfulness of fifty years ago is, to most of us, in the past, but to the people of Holland it is a continuing part of their lives, involving not only those who suffered and lived through the German occupation, but all young people bom since the war ended, right up to and including the present generation. They all, including young children, continue to show and give thanks for their liberation by honouring the Canadians in particular who fought and died in the very difficult and long Netherlands campaign, by lovingly tending the graves in war cemeteries there. .../2
