- 3 We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders Fields Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders Fields. And to end this, my answer to "this week's question," one more poem: HERE DEAD W E LIE By A.E. Housman Here dead we lie because we did not choose To live and shame the land from which we sprung. Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose; But young men think it is, and we were young. We MUST remember them ... W E WILL. REMEMBRANCE DAY IN WEST VANCOUVER This year the weather was sad and by the time the parade arrived at about 10:30 a.m. it was raining gently but steadily, and the umbrellas were up. But, as usual, the ceremonies were conducted with dignity and sincerity and attended by a large (perhaps a little smaller than last year due to the rain) crowd of all ages - it was good to see whole families there, with some really young children, and all stood firm until the ceremonies were completed. Then our very enjoyable task went into top gear and we welcomed all for a warm-up time of coffee, tea, juice and cookies, plus the warming bonus of meeting friends and just getting in out of the cold (any hands that I shook at the door were just like ice!) I certainly did not get the impression that Remembrance Day was "losing its significance" in West Vancouver - NO WAY! The event included something new this year - a visit and performance by the Ambleside Orchestra during the reception. They played at the east end of the main floor and, although they were competing with the usual volume of general conversation, their performance gave pleasure to many people. The reception went very well - the set-up was straightforward and the four "stations" (three coffee and one tea) plus the juice table for the youngsters operated smoothly. We again realized how handy the new layout is for this event and we had no problems. (No matter how many cookies we provide, they are never enough!) Clearing up went very well too - our many willing hands made light work - well done again, Friends, you did a super job which really was warmly appreciated by everyone who came. Thank you! And a sincere salute to Eileen who master-(mistress?) minded the whole operation in her usual charming way. .../4
