October 29, 1989 was chosen for the official opening of the fund-raising campaign. The Municipality would match every dollar raised in the community, including $100,000 donated by British Pacific Properties. Schools contributed about $15,000 to the Special Edition Campaign. In January, 1990 the Provincial Government granted $500,000 from "GO B.C." funds for the expansion. West Vancouver people have always supported their library and, as it entered its 40th Anniversary Year, the vision of an enlarged and ultra-modern facility stirred their imagination. Once again the characteristic enthusiasm gripped the community as it wholeheartedly prepared to pursue the goal. What better way to celebrate the 40th birthday of their beloved library! With acknowledgements to "Fulfilling a Dream" by Sally Carswell. The original target was eventually achieved, but as some costs had increased in the meantime due to inflation, further sums were needed and the fund is, in fact still open for contributions. The result of all these great efforts on the part of so many people now stands before us, and is to be officially opened, with appropriate celebrations, on September 18, 1993. No doubt, West Vancouver Memorial Library will continue to grow. This concludes our "Footprints" in the long walk from Mrs. Field's 1919 circulating library to the large home of all the latest technology and wizardry of a modern library. Rather like moving from a country cottage to a stately home. But our sense of scale will gradually take care of that, and I'm sure that the well-established feeling of warmth and friendly atmosphere of our very own library will fill the new space. Remember, it is what's INSIDE the building that counts. Next month we shall settle back into our more Friends "family" mode in the Newsletter, and I suspect there will be some "fun" creeping in again! Tony Scammell Editor
