a) For the many seniors in West Van: more travel books, more fiction (especially romances), large print books, talking books and "How To" books; b) An even more comprehensive Reference Department, including the collection and documentation of historical photographs; c) 18,000 volumes added in 1978, magazine subscriptions increased to over 300; d) A lively discussion group and weekly lectures on world affairs, informal evening lectures and readings by authors; e) A large children's department, books in French for the immersion program (since 1988), a Reading Club every summer; f) More multi-lingual books in the Adult Services Dept., including French titles and a collection of 500 Persian language books donated by the Iranian community in West Vancouver, the only such collection in the Vancouver area, serving the whole North Shore and the City of Vancouver; g) Video Cassettes (movies, How To and travel); compact discs and 500 records added; h) Bookmobile service, now stopping at twelve locations throughout the community, an important link with the outside world. In May 1978 Ruth Stott retired (May 17th being declared "Ruth Stott Day" in honour of her long term of service). Don Mills was appointed Chief Librarian on May 1st 1978. Not the least of the problems he had to deal with was the library's transition to an automated cataloguing and record-keeping system. As circulation figures rose, a more cost-effective method of record-keeping had to be found, and an automated system was introduced in 1981. While the library tried to maintain the feeling of a friendly neighbourhood library (and succeeded), behind the scenes it had become necessary to introduce the sophisticated techniques of the modem age to keep costs down and keep pace with the increased demands made upon it.
