The third and final lecture in the present series will take place, we hope in the Library, on June 16th and will feature Stephen Smith, a young pianist who is at present working for his doctorate at U.B.C. under Jane Coop. The subject of his musical lecture will be the sonatas of Beethoven, and this will include live performance at the piano to illustrate his talk. Tickets for this remaining concert are available at the Information Desk in the Library, at $14.00 for the single session. Refreshments will be served at 10:00 a.m. and the programme will commence at 10:30 a.m. MYRA MORGAN At our last meeting we were sorry to learn that Myra had broken her hip. I'm glad to report that she is making progress slowly but surely with her "walker." She sounded cheerful and in good heart when I phoned her recently. Our sincere wishes for a complete recovery as soon as possible, Myra. BUILDING CONSTRUCTION & OPENING It is now expected to be later in June before the new building can be open for public access. The intention is to occupy the new extension in stages, beginning with the Youth Services department, in an effort to minimize disruption and, if possible, avoid a total closure of the building. Moving house is usually considered bad enough, but remember that eventually nearly every one of the more than 200,000 items in the Library will have been moved - some more than once - and the 25,000 books at Hillside School will have been returned to the main collection. We can be grateful that we, as the "customers" in all these upheavals, have experienced very little inconvenience. Monthly transaction numbers have largely been maintained (even exceeded in March 1993 which was the busiest month ever) and this reflects very creditably on the organisers and the staff. (I suspect that Jack Mounce has had quite a lot to do with that). Hats off! The date of the Official Opening of the extended library now seems firm at September 18th, 1993. ARTISTS' RECEPTIONS The first reception will be on June 29th with, subsequent ones on August 3rd, August 30th, October 4th, November 1st and November 29th.
