scones. Not only was he apologetically given the same story, but the lady serving him went on to explain that "the Health and Hygiene men have just visited our tent to check." Is this what that once noble Churchillian vision of a United Europe has come down to -officials being employed to go round Women's Institute tents at flower shows to ensure that they are not serving home-made straberry jam? (Christopher Booker, Sunday Telegraph) CHIEF LIBRARIAN'S UPDATE One of the most frequently asked questions concerning the Library expansion project, particularly during the recent hot weather, was, will the Library be air-conditioned? The answer is, yes and no. Yes the new portion will be, but no, the old section will not. The Library Board recognizes that this will make it difficult to provide proper temperature and humidity control throughout the building and hopes to be able to extend the air-conditioning to the west and south wings of the building in the future. The funds were just not available at present. The project to add nearly 36,000 square feet to the present 19,500 is slightly behind schedule at the moment, due primarily to the difficulty of working in a very congested building site, but is still on target for an early spring completion. We'll keep you informed of progress. In the meantime, we're also on the point of taking possession of our new bookmobile, replacing the vehicle which has been such a popular feature in West Van for the past 15 years with one that is bigger and in many ways better. Of course the $22,500 contribution of the Friends was critical to the acquisition of the new bookmobile and we hope to give appropriate recognition and thanks for your gift during the official 'launch* of the vehicle, tentatively scheduled for November 11. An exciting year indeed! Jack Mounce Chief Librarian NEXT MEETING; Wednesday, September 23rd, 1992 at 7:00 p.m. Tony Scammell Editor
