NEWSLETTER No. 51 December 1991 Dear Friend of the Library, First, a few notes to keep you informed about what will be happening both before and after Christmas. CASINO NIGHT On Wednesday, December 18th, three of us will attend for "orientation" from 7:00 - 9:15 p.m. in Vancouver. The nights allocated to us for the Casino Nights are January 6th, 7th and 8th. Those who have already volunteered to help with this exciting, and we hope successful, undertaking will be contacted by telephone; we shall almost certainly need to have a special meeting before the day. More about this later. The positive news is that, assuming our efforts raise $20,000, Council will finance the $40,000 balance required for the purchase of a new Bookmobile. We need as many helpers as possible to benefit from the three nights allocated to us, so come and have some fun and ensure that we succeed! Please phone Eileen de Bues at 922-6446. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING This will be our next business meeting, on Wednesday, January 22nd, 1992 at 7:00 p.m. (There is no regular meeting this month) COCKTAIL PARTY This will be held on Monday, January 27th from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m and you will all be invited to come and join other Friends and meet members of the Library Board and Heads of Departments. While there will be no Newsletter in January, you will receive a reminder about the A.G.M. and an invitation to the Cocktail party. REMEMBRANCE DAY My apologies for omitting to report on this in the November Newsletter, particularly for failing to thank all those who helped organise and serve the refreshments, headed by Lois Kilburn who co-ordinated everything so well. The very heavy rainstorm during the Cenotaph ceremony was a severe test for all involved outside, and we were very impressed by the number of people who came and stood firm through it all, in what was a moving tribute to those who gave their lives. Afterwards we were glad to give them something to warm them up, at least 250 people, I'm sure. MEMBERSHIP 1992 Please renew your membership of the "FRIENDS" as early as possible, for 1992. A tear-off slip is incorporated here for your use. Thank you. CHRISTMAS BY ANY OTHER NAME ... ANCIENT AND MODERN I have gathered a posie of other men's flowers and nothing but the thread that binds them is my own (Mongtaigne).
