NEWSLETTER No.49 October 1991 Dear Friend of the Library, BOOK SALE: AIR CADETS: FRIENDS' FIRST LOOK "When you fail to plan, you plan to fail". We have planned to succeed! Much hard work has been going on behind the scenes to ensure that the coming book sale on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, October 27th, 28th and 29th will be another success, all being co-ordinated by Natalie Logan. It will be interesting to find ourselves downstairs this time, and hopefully it will give us more scope than exists in the main library area. At least the shorter distance to carry all the books from the "dungeon" on Saturday morning (October 26th) will mean a bit less work for the merry young men and women air cadets, of which there are promised to be twelve. They really are a great bunch - intelligent, hard-working, speedy and all-round good fun. They set great store by their quota of public service work, which is a recognised part of their qualifying programme. We are lucky to have them to help us. Don't forget that all current members of the Friends are entitled to attend an advance viewing of the book sale, including a modest number of purchases if you wish, on Saturday afternoon before the sale, i.e. on October 26 between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. ARTISTS' RECEPTIONS Coming soon: October 30: Tamara de Grandmaison November 14: Ann Hurst CASINO NIGHT To all the good people who volunteered to take part in this great opportunity to help the Library (with the Bookmobile problem?), thank you for your patience - you have not been forgotten! The target date has slipped to November or December, due to some administrative fumbling on the part of the B.C. Gaming Commission. Hope springs eternal that all will come right in the end! PAT Pat Scrivener has had a long, uncomfortable wait for hip replacement surgery and was recently anticipating a still longer wait until maybe Christmas or the New Year. But thankfully her fairy godmother arranged for a sudden cancellation by someone else and Pat was given short notice to go into hospital on October 8th. On Thanksgiving Day I spoke to her husband, Derek, to ask how she was getting on and he was obviously delighted with her progress - "she is her old self" - and her morale sounds excellent. She is one of our most dedicated members and I'm sure you will be glad to know that all is going well. We send her our sincere good wishes for a happy and complete recovery.
