NEWSLETTER No. 27 September 1989 Dear Friend of the Library: Since our last newsletter in June, during the summer break, a number of things have been happening behind the scenes, and this letter will bring you up to date and tell you about some interesting new opportunities in the future. Next Meeting Firstly, there will be no meeting in September, partly because some of us will be away on vacations (which were booked before the book sale date was brought forward) and partly because in the last week of this month we shall be finalizing arrangements and staffing for the sale. So our next regular monthly membership meeting will be on October 25, 1989. when we shall be talking about new matters of interest mentioned later in this letter. A Brief Update on Meetings since May 1. An interim and informal Executive Meeting was held on June 28th - informal because only the Chairman and three directors could attend, including Alan Maxwell our new Library Board liaison member, who was warmly welcomed. We discussed the presentation of service trophies to the Air Cadets and the successful June paperback book sale, details of which were included in the June newsletter. Jack Mounce in his written report referred to the October book sale and to the hiring of a Manager - Volunteer Services. I reported that Marie McWhirter and I had been asked to meet on July 7th with Bob Wyckham (Chairman of the Library Board), Jack Mounce and a retail gift shop operator, to explore marketing ideas and the possibility of re-opening our own Library Gift Shop. There was a feeling at this June 28th meeting that all our monthly meetings should be for the membership at large and not principally for the Executive, particularly as the idea of arranging "special" membership meetings had not received an enthusiastic response recently. So please note that all our regular meetings will be for everyone! 2. Book Sale Meeting on August 30th This was chaired by Barbara Payne who reported that all books for the upcoming sale had been sorted (one of those things happening behind the scenes). Barbara has been in charge of getting this moving and this meeting was called to go over all the tasks involved and to allot responsibilities to heads of sections in the different departments of the book sale. Barbara has fine-tuned our procedures and become an excellent organiser, so I am very sorry to have to tell you that she is shortly leaving West Vancouver to go and live in Ontario. We shall miss her both as a friend and as a dedicated Friend of the Library. I am glad to report that Betty Neilson is taking over from Barbara and to thank her on your behalf; I feel sure you will give her your support as you have done to Barbara and Shirley Smirke in the past.
