NEWSLETTER No. 26 June 1989 Dear Friend of the Library: I guess you could call this the Summer Issue of 1989 since the next issue won't be forthcoming until after the September meeting. With no meetings scheduled it's hard to come up with anything much to write about - unless you want a blow by blow account of your Intrepid Editor's trip to northern Newfoundland. I may cull out some of the choicer moments and use them as filler-in from September on. The first two of the following items are from the pen of Tony Scammell, who was, as Chairman, particularly involved in their realization. Thank you very much indeed for your efforts, Tony! On June 3rd, 1989, (West Vancouver Community Day) Tony Scammell represented the Friends of the Library at the annual Inspection and Dinner of No. 525 "Pathfinder" Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Cadets. This included an impressive parade, which was inspected and addressed by the Hon. Mary Collins, P.C., M.P., Associate Minister of Defence, which was followed by displays of skills and exhibits, and a dinner at which the Cadets were accompanied by their parents and a number of official guests. After the dinner and main speeches, a number of annual trophies were presented and your President was given an opportunity to tell the Cadets how much we appreciate their efforts, and that by helping the Library they are doing something which benefits the whole community of West Vancouver. He then formally presented the community service trophy to the Squadron and the individual trophies to the first two winners: Warrant Officer Frank Pimiskern and Corporal Paria Dideban, who were the outstanding members of the work parties at the Fall '88 and Spring '89 book sales, respectively. ********** Report on the Book Sale, May 29th, 1989: Although this was basically of paperbacks only, and had to be held inside the Library due to doubtful weather forecasts, it was very well organized by Barbara Payne from start to finish, and as a result ran very smoothly. The final result was a credit to all who helped, from the sorting stages to the actual sale and clearing up. A clear profit of $547.60 was resulted, some $100 better than at the June '88 book sale. We can look forward with hope to another "bumper edition" in October - the big one. We're ready for it, or will be after our Summer vacations.
