NEWSLETTER No. 20 November 1988 Dear Friend of the Library; The Book Sale broke at least three records: it realized an income of very slightly under $4,100; there were 31 Friends involved in one way or another; and a grand total of 268 hours of work were donated, more often than not involving duplication or multiplication of effort - so there were more than 268 man-hours - many more. Our thanks go to all who gave time and effort and most especially to those who organized, 'phoned, sorted and generally made the whole sale the record success that it was - Shirley Smirke, Pat Scrivener, Betsy Lee, Eileen de Bues, Barbara Payne and Lois Kilburn. A more especial word of thanks to each and every one of the Air Cadets who performed the back-breaking task of lugging the books up from the dungeon for setting up just prior to the sale. The Gift Shop is now open daily, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., until Christmas - and if you haven't yet seen it, you're in for a real surprise. It has some terrific items for sale, and as a Friend you get a 10% discount - so don't forget to bring your membership card. The Remembrance Day Reception was, I think, at least from the Library's point of view, another record in terms of the number of guests that we served after the ceremony at the Cenotaph. Tony and I estimate the number of people served as somewhere between 250 and 300, based on the fact that three large coffee urns were emptied before people started to leave and there was precious little left in the way of apple or orange juice, either.
