SEP 23 1988 NEWSLETTER No. 18 Late September 1988 Dear Friend of the Library: You are probably wondering why we need a second newsletter this month, so I will tell you. We did not have a meeting during August and there are some really important matters which we have to discuss and do something about at our regular meeting next Wednesday, September 28th, at 7:00 p.m. There are also some fun things too, like a draw for the clock-radio to celebrate 100-plus members! In addition to the routine items like minutes of the last meeting and reports concerning membership, financial matters, the Gift Shop and the Chief Librarian's report, the next book sale and the art display next month, the special business matters will include the following. 1. Incorporation under the Society Act and election of at least five Directors. 2. Election of a Gift Shop Sub-Committee. 3. A full discussion of Gift Shop policy regarding a) Opening hours. b) Staffing. c) Greater variety of items for sale. d) Publicity, both inside and outside the Library. 4. A membership Drive for Students (in schools?) and adults (via various "Book Clubs"). 5. Increasing the involvement of our general membership in current and future activities. I am concerned that we could, and should, be developing a more effective presence both inside and outside the Library. We must be more publicity minded and strive to make a real impact on the library patrons and the public generally in West Vancouver. I often hear about people who don't seem to know we exist! Even though space is very limited, we should make every effort to be more aggressive and fine-tune our selling techniques in the Gift Shop, offering a wider variety of merchandise. The shop is not just a hobby but a business. We want it to be successful. We must increase our membership and spread the work amongst a larger number of members who apparently need convincing that this is not only a worthwhile enterprise but an important contribution to the community. We want to raise money for the badly-needed expansion of the Library, to enjoy doing it together and to convince everyone that we deserve their support and goodwill. None of the above is impossible, it just needs enthusiasm and teamwork. But first we want your ideas, lots of them, the more the better. Come to our meeting on Wednesday, September 28th, and let's talk about it, then DO IT! Tony Scammell President
