NEWSLETTER No. 16 July 1988 Dear Friend of the Library: • "Make haste slowly" seems to be the theme - at least insofar as our incorporation is concerned. Well enough - since (so I'm told) the time to ask questions and for second thoughts is on the way to the altar, and not thereafter. It appears that the membership had some unanswered questions, hence we anticipate further discussion of the draft constitution and by-laws at the July 27th meeting, with a vote on the matter planned for our first meeting of the Fall, on September 28th. We understand that Erskine will still be in Scotland on July 27th, so if any of our "silent" members of a legal bent are minded to do so, their presence would be much appreciated. (If they were to bone up on the Society Act, R.S.B.C., prior to the meeting, so much the better.) A Note From The President As you know, one of our fundraising projects is the Gift Shop located in the Library next to the art display. We have tried initially to carry good-quality items at reasonable prices, which we hope will be attractive to Library patrons (and hopefully the occasional tourist as well). The work of local artists and crafts people is favoured, including prints of paintings (as greeting cards and framed prints), high-quality photographs of local landscapes and nature (also in greeting card form). We also have attractive Native Indian carvings in the form of letter openers, and smart jewellery items made by the local Lapidary Club members. Our stock also includes an attractive and practical range of sportswear - golf shirts, sweat shirts and sweaters in popular colours, made by Penman and a well-known manufacturer, all bearing the new Library logo and name in a tasteful stitched design. Recent additions include an excellent canvas tote bag with the logo and name silk-screened, and pencils with Library name (especially for students!). Also available is the official video tape of the 1987 75th Anniversary celebrations and activities, together with the official history of West Vancouver "A Place of Excellence", and a down-to-earth cookbook compiled by members of St. Stephen's Church for their 75th (parish) anniversary this year. These are some of the items we carry, which would all be acceptable as gifts or for your own personal use, and they all have special connections with West Vancouver and our Library. We hope as time goes on to be able to stock a greater range of items, but to start with we felt limited by the need for caution in starting up, and by the very real financial constraints of starting a "retail" business in the context of our volunteer status.
