NEWSLETTER June 1988 No. 15 Dear Friend of the Library: There isn't a great deal to say in this issue; but what there is, is of some considerable importance to us. First of all, the June 22nd meeting has been postponed by one week to June 29th. As usual it will be at 7 p.m. in the Seminar Room. This meeting is one of great importance to us collectively, as the principal item on the agenda will be a consideration of, and vote of acceptance upon, Erskine Blackburn's draft Constitution and By-laws for the Friends of the Library as required under the Society Act. The Constitution sets out the purposes of the Society as follows: a) To disseminate information and stimulate public interest in the West Vancouver Memorial Library and the services it offers. b) To assist the Board of Management and Staff of the Library whenever invited to do so. c) To publish newsletters and sponsor public meetings promoting the enjoyment of music, art and literature in the Library. d) To accept gifts, grants, legacies, devises and bequests and to collect moneys by means of fees, donations or otherwise and to engage in fundraising activities, and to hold, invest, expand or deal with such gifts, grants, legacies, devises, bequests and moneys in furtherance of the purposes of the society. The other main clauses of the Constitution say, in effect, that: - we operate without gain for our members and any profits shall be used for promoting our purposes; - no member of the board shall be paid any remuneration; - if we wind up the Society the assets remaining after payment of all our costs and expenses etc. shall be distributed to a registered charitable institution; - we operate only in B.C. Our aims have always been: a) To create a friendly, attractive and functional centre to serve as a source of reliable information and ideas for all members of the community. b) To seek continually to identify and respond to community needs by providing appropriate programs, resources and services. c) To promote the Library's active role in the community of West Vancouver through good public relations.
