NEWSLETTER No. 13 April 1988 Dear Friend of the Library: Perhaps the first item to be called to your attention is that the Gift Shop now has a co-ordinator, Elizabeth Leigh-Spencer. Welcome Wayne, and we hope you find the work and the setting congenial. We're delighted to gain the benefit of your great experience in this area as we prepare to launch The Corporation! Now while on the topic of the Gift Shop, I must mention that Tony, Eileen, Pat and Elizabeth made a trip to. Richmond on the 12th for a final selection of goods from the supplier out there; and I have it from a good source who would rather not be named that Tony was very, very pleased with the results of the excursion. Some last minute preparations are now in hand, and it is anticipated that the Gift Shop will open for business at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 14. Look out, Eatons and The Bay! I'm afraid my report on last month's meeting is going to be a trifle skimpy; I missed it, unfortunately, being a victim of W.V. 'flu'. However, having read through the minutes, I see that one very sensible idea that I'm surprised no-one has thought of before was moved and carried; to the effect that we have a special student membership rate of $5.00 a year. The next step, presumably, is to find ways of attracting some of these young people into our ranks. Possibly the higher profile that the Gift Shop and the extra volunteer activities in the Library are going to give us will help. Any other ideas? Something else worth repeating from the minutes: no Spring Book Sale this year! Jack tells me that the Department Heads have been very busy lately, and just haven't had time to sort through their respective collections for "discards". Apparently the dreaded 'flu' has also wreaked havoc among Library staff members, during the busiest three months the Memorial Library has ever seen. At such times discarding assumes a low priority and the thoughts of staff are on mere survival. Jack assures me, though, that there will be tons of books (literally) available for a super sale beginning, very likely, on October 30. Unfortunately, the suggestion that we get involved in the sale of pocket books at the Rec Centre on Community Day was politely squashed by the Community Day committee, which reminded us that their tables are really reserved for the sale of crafts, plants and so on. Oh, well.
