NEWSLETTER No. 11 February 1988 Dear Friend of the Library On Wednesday, January 27th, 1988, we had our General Meeting - being the first such (or so I was given to understand) one cannot really call it an Annual Meeting until next year. This letter is to bring you up to date on what took place at it. Dawn Sikula and Tony Scammell both resigned from their respective positions - both to a hearty round of well-deserved applause; Dawn retired to take over the chairmanship of the Memorial Library Foundation and Tony moved up from being Newsletter Editor to filling the post of President. Audrey Hardman has consented to become our Vice-President, and was duly elected such, and the rest of the executive remains the same. We had a very large turnout at the Meeting (let's keep it up !) - the most members in at least six months, by my rough estimate; naturally it was because of the Meeting. I wouldn't be so crass as to attribute it to the excellent wine, cheese and canapes that accompanied the Meeting. Many, many thanks to Sandie Bradley for organizing the wine, Betsy Lee for her attractive (and very tasty) cheese platters and Pat Scrivener and Eileen De Bues for the canapes. We were honoured by the presence of five members of the Library Board: Dawn Sikula of course, plus Bob Wyckham, the Chairman, Heather Ireland, who will be attending our monthly meetings as the liaison member of the Board to the Friends, David Hall and Bob Gayton. There were also some new members; one of whom, Erskine Blackburn, thoughtfully brought a camera and flash - Jack Mounce says the snaps are quite remarkable. We'll see, next meeting. (I hope!) Of course, the inimitable Jack was there - I kept thinking at the meeting (and still do) what a pity it is he is employed by the Library, he'd be such a good active member of the Friends! I know from my short experience how much time and zeal he devotes to the Library and Friends. Perhaps we could consider making him an honorary member? In other business, if I may be permitted GIFT SHOP: We'll soon be in a position to open our little gift shop in the Library, having completed the necessary modifications to the display case and (nearly) having finalized arrangements to apply the new logo to a variety of merchandise. The plan is to operate it on a regular schedule for a few hours a week initially and see what develops. It should be fun while bringing in some additional revenue and helping to raise the profile of the Friends.
