BACK TO WORK Book Sale: Yes, there will be one of those (now regular) book sales at the end of April, so it will soon be time to start opening up those boxes of discarded treasure down in Aladdin's Cave in the basement, not only to sort them but, in doing so, to get a first privileged look at what is going to be for sale when the time comes. Lots of wonderful bargains! Gift Shop; We are finalizing the design of the logo and will be in a position to prepare the necessary design work for application to the proposed articles for sale. Library Expansion: The Cornerstone Planning Group Report on the expansion of the Memorial Library will be presented to Council on January 25. This would be a good opportunity for the Friends to show their support for the Library by attending - and it will be very enlightening tool GOOD INTENTIONS! How can we be more effective in 1988? A few suggestions: 1. Be as informed as possible about the Library, what it is aiming to achieve, how it intends to do it, and what we should be trying to do to help, without intruding, as it were. 2. See how we can develop a better understanding of and closer relationship with the Library staff. 3. Develop further our relationship to the Library Board by seeking regular liaison and briefing, to enable us to be aware of on-going developments and what, if any, part we might be asked to play. We understand that a member of the Board will be attending our monthly meetings. 4. Develop our public relations capability, be more obvious, make more noise, so that we can .... 5. Build public confidence in our enthusiasm and genuine concern about the present over-crowding problems and raising the funds that will be needed for expansion. 6. Use some of our funds for something visible, e.g. improve the aesthetics of the Library in some way such as art, lighting, flowers. (The Board may wish us to make some specific contribution to the expansion when the time comes, but perhaps something now to make everyone more aware that "Friends" are real, living people might improve our standing.) DON'T FORGET: 1. To renew your membership. 2. Let's get together at the AGM on January 27. Tony Scammell, Newsletter Editor
