Mayor Lanskail added that the Library represents a most appropriate Memorial to servicemen from West Vancouver who lost their lives in Canada's wars, and that people like Ruth Stott have made it a special place in the community. We Friends of the Memorial Library are privileged to share in the task of keeping the Library strong, both as a library and as a LIVING memorial. "Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw the torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields." From "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrea (1872-1918) The Library first opened its doors on November 11, 1950, and is still growing. Expansion is "in the air", but we manage to preserve the friendly "family" atmosphere, which we all value so highly. The Library houses a Book of Remembrance in which are inscribed the names of those who lost their lives in the Second World War. In addition, a much-loved stained glass window, donated in 1950 by the sister of a casualty of the 1914-1918 War, commemorates the Memorial Library's origins. The plaque commemorating Ruth Stott will be mounted on a wall on the second floor of the Library. MEMBERSHIP Our numbers have been growing steadily and we now have over 90 members. Who will be number 100? (Don't tell anyone, but that person will be presented with a clock-radio to mark our first "century" in membership!) Membership renewal forms will be coming out soon, and when they do your early response and renewal will be joyfully received. Why don't you encourage a friend (as many as you like!) to join the Friends - not only will they have a chance to win the clock-radio, but if they join before December they will get an extra month's membership for their 1988 fee! THE GIFT SHOP Unfortunately, Bryan Yirush was unable to attend the last meeting owing to illness, but he came over on November 5th and met with Jack Mounce and members of the sub-committee looking into this. We had an interesting and helpful discussion re: suggested items and suppliers, target prices, etc. Further progress will be made once we have decided on a suitable "logo", wording, etc. The administration and accounting aspects are also to be studied as soon as possible. OFF-SITE STORAGE As you know, the Library is seriously overcrowded (with books all the time, and often with people too) and off-site storage (of books only!) has been needed for some time. It now seems likely that storage space can be made available in the basement of the Municipal Hall commencing in January 1988. CHRISTMAS GIFT SUGGESTION If you have distant (especially overseas) relations or friends on your list and can't think of a suitable gift, what about our own municipal history "A Place of Excellence" - it's reasonably priced at $10.00, it's easy to pack and just shows what an enterprising bunch of people can produce in the span of one lifetime. SEE YOU AT OUR MEETING ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 25TH. Tony Scammell, Newsletter Editor
