"The Cornerstone team was asked to determine the feasibility of expanding the existing library, to come up with a number of options for doing this and an estimate of costs. At the October 13 session they presented an ambitious plan for developing more than 41,000 sq. ft. of space in the ravine to the east of the present building, which should meet the library's needs for 20 years or more. "The present parking deck is not capable of bearing the weight of regular stack loading. Instead the Cornerstone architects propose to place a 1,600 square foot pavilion on top of the deck which would contain a number of meeting rooms and space for a small art gallery. "Their long-term plan also calls for the construction of a low-profile parking structure on the site across 20th Street which is presently occupied by the North Shore Union Board of Health. The health unit or some other municipal building could form the top or the front portion of the parking structure. "These are ambitious plans and the projected costs are up in the $5 to $6 million dollar range. Phasing of the development is almost a certainty with some portion of the ravine construction being the likely first priority. The architects expect to deliver their final report to the Library Board by the end of October, following which it will be presented to Council. "While there appears to be general agreement that the Memorial Library needs to grow, the timing of construction will obviously be dependent on the availability of funding. The Memorial Library Foundation of West Vancouver and, no doubt, the Friends of the Library will have a part to play in meeting the financial challenge posed by this exciting project, as it is clear that substantial support from private sources will be necessary in order for it to proceed. "In the meantime the books are jammed ever more tightly on the shelves, despite the fact that 30,000 to 40,000 are out on loan at any one time. The Board expects to begin storing part of the collection away from the Library in the near future as a short-term necessity." THE GIFT SHOP - two newsworthy items. Firstly, an anonymous donor has presented a first rate, eight foot long display case for the use of the Gift Shop in displaying its merchandise. Secondly, Tony Scammell will bring his friend Brian Yirush to our next meeting (October 28) to discuss what products the Shop will carry. HISTORICAL PHOTOGRAPHS CONTEST ends at the end of October, so get those photos of local historical interest in. A sentence or two explaining who/what/why/when/where or any of the above would be appreciated. They will be judged by a committee selected at the September meeting. OUR NEXT MEETING will be October 28, 7 p.m., in the Seminar Room. If you haven't been to one, the coffee is decaff., the gingersnaps are great, and both are free, so come on out. Charles Corbet, filling in for Tony Scammell.
