NEWSLETTER No. 7 October 1987 Dear Friend of the Library Hello, I'm Charles Corbet, a relatively new Friend of the Library (No. 74), and editor pro tem of the Newsletter while Tony is away. Amanda will be helping out too, so I hope Tony won't be too disappointed when he gets back. THE NEXT BOOK SALE will be November 1 - 3 in the Library. The Friends' Preview will be on Saturday, October 31, from 5-6 p.m., plenty of time to get out and support the Library and then get back home before the ghosties and ghoulies descend with their threats of "Trick or Treat". Friends are entitled to purchase up to three hardcover books at $1 (each) and as many paperbacks as you like (25 cents). PLEASE WELCOME OUR NEW FISCAL YEAR. Our Treasurer pointed out at the last meeting that we didn't seem to have a fiscal year, which made keeping her records a little difficult. We thought it was in rather bad form to have a treasurer in distress, so we adopted the calendar year (January 1 - December 31) as our fiscal year especially for the convenience of Friends so they would know when their memberships become "overdue", to borrow a library term. WHICH LEADS INEXORABLY TO THE NEXT POINT - there will be a Membership Renewal form delivered soon ... well, let's say it will be sent soon and leave it at that. If you would renew promptly, and bring in some new members it would be much appreciated. For that matter, if you were to renew in advance of the notices being sent out and thereby help save on postage just think of the money we could save -let's see: 36 cents x 90 Friends is about $32.40. Wow! (I'll bet you didn't know that your membership costs just under three cents a day!) FOR THE LATEST NEWS ON THE LIBRARY EXPANSION STUDY please see the following summary which Jack Mounce prepared for me to re-hash in this Newsletter. On reading it through, I decided I couldn't have said it better myself, so I won't. "Several members of the Friends attended a Library Board session on October 13 at which Jay Bancroft and Simon Richards of the Cornerstone Planning Group reviewed the plan they have developed for expanding the Memorial Library. "In the April newsletter we described the findings of library consultants in 1986 that the library is seriously short of space -15,000 sq.ft, short, in fact, with an additional 1,000 sq.ft, required each year, mainly to accommodate the growing collection.
