- " ... I was pleased for her to be involved in the process of selection, as finding the right book is a large part of the problem." Most parents thought the service needed no improvement, however one asked if the programme "could continue during the rest of the year less often" and another suggested making it "available to more children". All spoke with warm appreciation of the interest and individual attention given to their children by the librarians, and we can rest assured that the Children's Department is in excellent hands. Our contribution to this summer programme has been of money, rather than personal effort, although our efforts helped to raise the money in the first place. I think you will agree that this is a good example of the very real contribution we can make to our Library in any number of ways as time goes on, and we can take a real pride in the excellent results achieved by the library staff. Library 75th Anniversary Committee Our own Anniversary Committee has been active during the summer, and has helped initiate two significant and exciting contests: Old photos of West Vancouver: This month the Library is launching a campaign urging citizens to provide the Library with any old photos depicting West Van people, events or recognizable locations in the community, which the Library can then duplicate for its archives. The ten most significant photos, as determined by a panel of Friends of the Library judges, will win certificates of merit entitling the bearers to ten free library reserves, while the overall winners will also receive a framed photograph of a West Vancouver scene. Judging will take place at the end of October and if you would like to help with judging, please contact Jack Mounce at 926-1380. Historical Art Contest: Adult North Shore artists were invited to submit an original drawing or painting of a pre-1950 West Vancouver building or scene. Art work is to be judged on September 16th and successful submissions will hang in a special exhibit in the West Vancouver Memorial Library during the month of October. Book Sale Our next book sale is scheduled for early November, so "can sorting be long delayed?" No - in fact volunteers are needed now so that Shirley Smirke can get the work underway shortly. Please phone her at 926-2060 if you can spare some time to assist in this very "essential occupation". Thanks. Library Expansion Study Cornerstone Planning Group of Vancouver has been chosen to carry out a feasibility study to determine the expandability of the existing Library. Their report is expected by the end of October. October Newsletter As your Editor will be on vacation in October, he hopes to persuade one or two interested members to stand in for him.
