NEWSLETTER No. 6 September 1987 Dear Friend of the Library "If all the year were playing holidays, to sport would be as tedious as to work" - William Shakespeare. Or, as George Bernard Shaw later put it: "A perpetual holiday is a good working definition of hell". Summer 1987 must surely be close to the exception which proves this rule; not only the wonderful weather, but also the unflagging enthusiasm of all who have organized and taken part in so many West Vancouver 75th Anniversary events during the summer, have blended work with a holiday atmosphere in a most delightful way. We can be justly proud of our community spirit and thankful for all those organizations and, yes, individual people who nourish it in any way, large or small. Summer Reading Club The Friends of the Library will be pleased to know that our decision in May to "provide $1,350.00 to West Vancouver Memorial Library to expand the children's summer reading programme for 1987" has been very worthwhile and much appreciated. Cheryl McGregor, Head of Children's Services, in her letter to Dawn Sikula thanking the Friends for their support, says "We reached 144 children in the community, many of whom were not regular library users before the club began .... Our circulation figures for the month of July show a 10% increase over the same month last year. We also noticed that other children and parents would observe the librarians helping club members find reading material and would then approach the librarian for advice for themselves. "In the future, the children from this program will know that the librarians of West Vancouver Memorial Library are eager to help them choose books from our large and varied collection. We also expect that they now have an interest in reading and in libraries that is greater and more enthusiastic than it was before the summer began." Parents were invited to respond to a questionnaire about their impressions of the service and how it had benefited their children, and to make suggestions for any improvements. Most said that their child's reading had noticeably improved, as regards general interest, frequency, and variety of books chosen. Of the parents overall impressions of the programme, typical replies were: - "The librarians take a real interest in the children and their reading preferences, but encourage them to broaden their horizons." - "Excellent - it is definitely the one-on-one meeting with the librarian that motivates my children." - "Introducing (her) to new authors and making her feel special by showing her books which might be just for her made her feel that the library was a wonderful place to go."
