shop for their sale - could we persuade Park Royal to "donate" the use of empty space for the public good occasionally? - Rummage sales - it sounds daunting but why not? Space for preliminary collection and sorting would be needed, but other organizations manage it so why can't we? Why not combine a book and rummage sale (plus baking and whatever else comes to mind!). Rummage sales are top producers. We ain't tried nothing yet! Memberships We have some way to go yet, compared with typical numbers in the U.S. We can do more if there are more people to share the load and diversify our activities, and the subscriptions help! - Tell your friends, give them application forms. - Should we put together a press release? Give a free book to anyone taking out a membership on the day of a book sale? One U.S. group gained 23 new members at one sale. - Many U.S. cities have several hundred Friends, and Arlington Heights, Illinois has 900! SPENDING ALL THIS MONEY Normally, money raised by selling discarded library books is used for the purchase of new books. But money raised by our other possible activities could be used in all sorts of ways to enhance the Library itself and to increase its effectiveness. For instance: Donate additional furniture - what about having a "Friends Foyer" for (ssshh!) quiet chats and our "gift" outlet? Even coffee and cookies for seniors? - Donate art objects from time to time, or a large illuminated globe or some decorative lighting, a fountain, just let your mind go free and think of something exciting! Work with library staff to sponsor additional interest programs, for instance a free lecture series on almost anything from new tax laws to children's literature, local history, gardening, or anything not now being done. Form a publicity committee to search for and recruit writers, artists, idea people, photographers. - Enter a float in the Community Day parade. Donate subscriptions to worthwhile publications not now carried by the Library within existing budgets. Sponsor contests such as poster competitions for schools (prizes to be book tokens, winners to be feted at a Library occasion), and right now we need a Newsletter logo contest. Decorate the Library with flowers according to season, buying some during the winter and organizing donations from private gardens during spring, summer and fall. - Organize a dinner in conjunction with our AGM to which Friends invite guests (potential members), with a keynote speaker. FINAL WORD Friends in the U.S. are geared to fundraising and do it with a will, that's obvious. Very often they even work to provide the basic necessities, e.g. basic furniture, new books, library equipment, audio cassettes, even computers, much of which is provided for us through the operating budget of the West Van. Library. In some cases the Americans are faced with raising funds to build a permanent library where none exists at present. We are indeed fortunate by comparison. The American Friends sound very dedicated. Come on, West Vancouver - let's do it! Tell us what you think!! Our next meeting is on Wednesday. June 10th, (next week) 7:00 p.m. in the Seminar Room.
