NEWSLETTER No. 4 May 1987 Dear Friend of the Library: First of all our thanks and appreciation to all Friends and staff who helped make the April book sale another significant success (special mention must go to Shirley Smirke for her organizing ability and hard-working example) from the initial sorting in the "dungeon" down below decks, the fetching and carrying heavy boxes, setting up and staffing the actual sale, to taking down and packing up the unsold books for final disposal, with all the team spirit before, during and after the sale. It all resulted in the tidy sum of $2,207.00 destined for the eventual purchase of more new books for all of West Vancouver to enjoy. Well done, indeed! WHAT NEXT? "The toughest thing about success is that you've got to keep on being a success." - Irving Berlin. Assuming that resting on laurels is no longer permitted, what can we do to keep our enthusiasm bright and rust-free? First let's take a short step back and "re-cap" about a few things: 1. Library Home Service (for the Homebound): a pamphlet explaining how this can be provided has been prepared and is available at the Library: we are taking steps to organize distribution of the pamphlet to places where the information will be helpful, such as doctors' offices, churches, "Meals-on-Wheels", newspapers (North Shore News and Weekender), the Board of Health, Social Workers and any others that we know of. This will come up at our next meeting on May 13th. 2. Library Expansion: West Vancouver District Council has approved the architectural feasibility study, and the Library Board will establish terms under which this will be carried out. Initially this will cover such things as: - soil conditions in the ravine on the east side; - the creek aspect generally; - overall design to fit the space available; - the square footage that could be provided; - compliance with building codes, and so on. 3. Temporary Off-Site Storage of Books: You will remember the Library Consultants concluded this would be a necessary short-term strategy until the expansion could be achieved: the Library Board are pursuing this and intend to take a proposal to Council in the near future, which would probably consist of siting an ATCO unit in a suitable position close to the Library in a reasonably attractive way. Unfortunately suitable vacant ground-floor space could not be found in local schools.
