2. Off-Site Storage: This would reduce congestion by storing some books off the present site. The consequences of this would be to: i) Increase costs by $20,000 in 1987 and by as much as $52,000 by 1991. ii) Cause patron inconvenience because these books would not be readily available and delays in obtaining them would be unavoidable. iii) Make for more efficient management in the Library itself, but result in inefficient management of resources overall. The conclusion here is that this appears to be a necessary shortterm strategy. 3. Open One Or More Branches: This would result in more space, more staff and greater patron accessibility. But it would also mean: i) Higher costs. ii) Lower efficiency in the use of the collection. iii) Some increase in patron accessibility, but this might not be too dramatic because so many patrons visit the present Library in passing en route to or from work, shopping, exercise classes and so on. The use of branches could therefore be somewhat limited. The conclusion is that this is not a viable alternative. 4. Expansion Of The Present Site: Building an addition to the existing Library building would involve: i) A large capital investment. ii) Higher operating costs than at present. But it would be the best means of meeting on-going public demand. The conclusion is that this is the recommended alternative. LIBRARY SPACE NEEDS: Briefly, the consultants estimated that we need 15,000 square feet of additional space to meet the current level of service, and an additional 1,000 square feet per year for 20 years (20,000 sq. ft.) to meet the current growth rate - a grand total of 35,000 square feet, not to mention, of course, additional parking. OPTIONAL SPACE NEEDS: These might include space for (1) Archives, which now are kept in several locations and would be better all together, (2) Art Gallery and (3) Theatre. KEEP IN MIND: Our Book Sale on April 26 - 28. Sorting has been going well, thanks to so many hard-working friends, and publicity will be generated in various ways, e.g. North Shore News, Library News, signage in the Library, Seniors' Centre, to name a few. Our next meeting is on at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8, in the Seminar Room at the Library. FINALLY A PIECE OF BAD ADVICE: "Never lend books, for no one ever returns them; the only books I have in my library are books that other folk have lent me". Anatole France. So that's where all our overdue books are! Maybe some of you would like to help remind some of our "Anatole France's" that other people want to read those books too - in a "Friendly" manner of course! • Hoping to see you on April 8th - please come along and join us -remember what Helen Maclnness said: "Nothing is interesting if you're not interested."
