NEWSLETTER No. 1 February 1987 Dear Friend of the Library WHY A NEWSLETTER? This is the first Newsletter for some time and from now on there will be one every month, to keep you informed about matters of special interest to Friends of the Library, including inside information not always included in the monthly "Library News": however the "News" contains not only a contribution from Jack Mounce, our Chief Librarian, but also much helpful information about the many services provided and coming events in the Library; it is available to the public so will not be duplicated in our newsletter. You will continue to receive Minutes of our monthly meetings and other items as appropriate, and we hope you will do your best to attend our meetings if you possibly can. The next one will be held on Wednesday, February 11th, at 7.00 p.m. in the Seminar Room at the Library. WHAT ARE FRIENDS FOR? Previously the Friends have been rather "low-key", but from now on the Library Board wants us to play a very significant role in expanding public awareness and assisting with all kinds of fund-raising and publicity projects. In addition to the activities listed in the membership application brochure, our recent meetings have produced a lot of good ideas and optimism for our functions and purposes. Our Library is an extremely busy and happy place, largely because the people of West Vancouver support and appreciate it: the staff do a fantastic job and we can do many things to supplement that work and contribute to the high quality of service demanded by citizens of West Vancouver. This is a real challenge for us and an exciting one: it's interesting and it's important for West Vancouver. DID YOU KNOW? ... • Every day at least 2,000 books (3,000 or 4,000 on Saturdays) are borrowed or returned, or about 700,000 per year. Every year between 12,000 and 15,000 new hardcover items are purchased to keep stock up to date - and only about 8,000 are discarded - so the number of books in the Library grows by about 5,000 or 6,000 per year. This concerns us in two ways: We organize book sales and raise money to help buy new books (we raised $3,000 in December). We are to help raise money and public awareness for the necessary expansion of our "overworked" Library.
