Sketch February 2006 Page 5 attest to this. As Singer Sargent said "I don't paint views". Kiff said "Looking at Vancouver is better than painting it." In other words, he is now more interested in the small things that make up the wider view. He views his paintings of water cascading from quiet still pools to rushing torrents as "big still lifes". Kiff cautioned us to be careful of becoming locked into a particular style. We should "Dare to try new things". We must "Just allow things to happen risk!" He shared with us his recent oil painting technique of glazing over a drippy acrylic under painting and then applying thick impasto over that. His style is a lot freer than it used to be and he is excited about it. Kiff shared two things with us about oil painting: 1 paint dark to light and 2 darks should be thin and transparent and lights should be fat and opaque. - Got it? Alfrightly then! I hope to goodness I transposed my notes accurately from that evening. If I have made any mistakes I am sure you will let me know! At any event, a good time was had by all. The food was great and the companionship superlative. So if you didn't make it to this celebration, make sure you don't miss next years! Judy Osiowy Because we didn't put out a January newsletter I was unable to pre-announce our January guest artist, Judy Osiowy (oh show vee) formerly Prendergast. Judy gave a very interesting demonstration of using acrylics on wet watercolour paper. She also works in pastels and watercolour. - She has taught drawing and painting for fifteen years at the West Vancouver Senior's Centre, North Vancouver Recreation. Commission and in North and West Vancouver schools, Judy is well known for her colourful murals at the Versatile Shipyards, the Kiwanis Care Home on Mount Seymour Parkway, the North Shore Animal Shelter and in numerous private homes and schools. Judy now calls Half Moon Bay on the Sunshine Coast home and offers group lessons and art retreats there. Anyone interested in her classes or retreats can reach her at 778-836-5454 or 1-604885-5325. Brittani Faulkes Our guest artist for February's meeting wifi be Brittani Faulkes. Brittarn gave us a workshop on "abstraction" in the fall which we thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated. Brittam paints in two styles: highly realistic using acrylic inks with stippling "pointalistically" and the style she will demonstrate to us abstract painting in pastels, oils or acrylics. - - Brittany was born and raised in Nanaimo but now resides in Steveston. She received her art education at Emily Carr, Sapporo's Bisen College of Art and UBC where she earned her BA, BFA, MA and PhD. Her artistic roots are in drawing, photography and computer graphics. You can view samples of her work on her website at www.brittanifaulkes.com
