Thursdays - parents and other adults, greatly increases a child's chances of becoming a happy and involved human being." - Dorothy Butler, in "Babies Need Books" LlRflR flWS GETTING THE MOST FROM YOUR LIBRARY Last year West Vancouver citizens borrowed an average of 17 items from the Memorial Library, by far the highest ratio in the Lower Mainland. This figure is easily determined: the ULISYS computer system counts every loan (628,384) and the 1981 census tells us that the population is 36,867. Much harder to measure is the use of Library holdings within the building, whether it be reading a magazine, checking census or other statistical information, glancing through travel information, consulting an encyclopedia or almanac and so on. A variety of studies has suggested that the proportion of internal activity to external loans may range from one half to four or five times as much. What ever the relationship, we know that in the Memorial Library internal use of materials as opposed to borrowing is substantial. -- -- 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. The children's librarian will lead an informal discussion of books that cn be used effectively and enjoyably with the youngest children.
