arts editorial Note From the Editor Happy New Year. I'm happy-this issue has some of the best writ ing and images yet to grace the pages of Arts Alive. North Shore author Trevor Carolan opens the door into North Vancouver artist Arnold Shives' awesome talents. Writer Ben D'Andrea visits choreographer Jennifer Mascall, of West Vancouver, in a studio space and watches her new work take shape. His story reveals the passion in Mascall's work and the success of her flexible approach to dancers. Passion is the theme in the story behind Judith Marcuse's successful Kiss P roject and, indeed, her career. The sen sual cover art by David Cooper is fittingly the signature photo for the 1996 Kiss Project. Blair Dewan keeps us in the '90s with his humorous review of some new arts Websites. Arts Ali1·e has also joined the '90s with the launch of our on-line arts calendar service. Interested groups can submit their events to the calendar from their own computers, dial up the site and add event information. Have a look at the site (www.communicopia.bc.ca/services/) or call us for more details. Look for an article on this free service in the next issue. Lawyer Laura Spitz discusses some of the myths about entertainment law and its lawyers. Watch for future legal columns which will provide tips on contentious areas of the arts such as copyright and royalties. Curator Karen Love provides Arts Alil'e readers with a sneak preview of the new photo-based show, Urban Fictions, at Presentation House Gallery. Kudos for their recent exhibit, World Tea Party. It was a great success that garnered coveted coverage in premiere arts magazines such as Canadian Art and Border Crossings. Our readers wrote in to provide us with great tips on how to be an arts consumer on a tight budget and Leslie Charleton adds to their ideas with her article on volunteering. The stories and the strong images in this issue make me very excited about the arts and artists on the North Shore. I'm looking forward to the upcoming year and trust the contents of Arts Alive will continue to reflect the wonderful depth of talent on our doorstep. P.S. I had more than a few close friends tell me to change my picture. Above, I'm taking a reading break while on a hiking trip along the West Coast Trail. - C/) 2 Gloria Loree Our Lucky Winners!
