It has been my experience that lawyers are representative of the general population: There are good people and "less good" people. There are good lawyers and "less good" lawyers. The reasons why a lasyer may be attracted to arts and entertainment law are as varied as the reasons artists are attracted to the arts. My interest is in negotiation and contracts. Other lawyers may practise in these areas because they are excellent litigators with an interest in the arts. Others may simply have a daughter who plays the electric fiddle for a local band and, after representing her in a record deal, discovered a knack for the area. If you are concerned, ask your lawyer why she or he practises in this area. Remember: you should be more concerned with whether or not she or he can competently represent you. For more information about arts and entertainment law, the Law Library at the Vancouver Courthouse (800 Smithe Street) and the UBC Law Library both have sections on arts and entertainment law.
