call.board Arts Travel Grant The City and District of North Vancouver recently approved a grant program that recognizes the dedication and effort put forth in pursuit of high artistic intent, by providing grants to assist deserving groups and individuals to participate in out-of-province arts events. There is no deadline: applications will be considered when they are submitted. To be eligible, an organization or individual applying for a grant must have presented or exhibited on the North Shore for a minimum of two years and reside in North Vancouver. Teen Playwrights Wanted Gasworks Actors Studio is sponsoring a one-act playwriting competition for 13to 19-year-olds. Cash prizes will be awarded ($500 for 1st prize. $250 for 2nd prize, and $100 for 3rd prize). Please note that the deadline for submissions is Friday, September 16th. - Design & Decoration Program North Shore Continuing Education offers a 2-year, part-time certificate program in design and decoration. The program includes twelve courses on residential! commercial design and space planning: the art of colour coordination and lighting: design styles of the past and present; interior finishes: drawing: and drafting. The program was developed to build the knowledge and design skills that are increasingly needed to start a career or to stay competitive in a broad range of design-related fields: the building industry, land developers, contractors and home renovators: companies that offer goods and services to residential and commercial consumers; and in the home improvement business. Many of the courses will also be of interest to those who want to broaden their knowledge of design and decoration or are interested in one of the topics offered. The program offers twelve courses on a part-lime basis over six semesters: two courses per semester, twide a week. Two information sessions on the design and decoration program are planned for Wednesday. September 7th at 7:30 pm and Saturday. September 10th at 10:30 am. The Seedling Projects & Solo Flights The New Play Centre, which produces of the Vancouver New Play Festival, is now soliciting submissions for one-person shows and short theatre pieces. The Seedling Projects must be able to go from "bare stage to bare stage in 15 minutes," they must be new pieces in either outline form or completed script, and they must be submitted by November 15th. Selected seedlings will be produced at the 1995 New Play Festival. Projects selected in the Solo Flights category will also see production at the 1995 festival. There are no restrictions on content or length, but all submissions must be for solo shows, and they must be original, unproduced works. Completed scripts shouldbe submittedbyNov. 1st. Looking for Not-Lazy Artists Lazy Bay Café & Bakery is looking for artists interested in showing their work in a café setting for periods of 4-6 weeks during the coming year. Lazy Bay Café is located in Parkgate Village. on the way to Mt. Seymour Park near the community of Deep Cove. It is a neighbourhood meeting place and a stop for tourists and Vancouverites visiting the North Shore. Since opening in 1992. Lazy Bay has hung many artists-- Lindsay Ross, Devereux Hodgson, Shauna Miller. Ingelore Dwyer. Ross Munro. Thelma Grammond, Patricia Hunter. Dawne Garrett,Judy Prendergast. Velvet Bailles. Graham Eagle and Heather Fisher. Presently hanging are works by Molly McDonald and Julie Dormer. All have survived and even thrived! North Van District Hall Public Art Commission The District of North Vancouver wishes to commission an artist to produce public art for the atrium of its newly renovated and expanded Municipal Hall. The funding for this commission has been provided as a legacy from the B.C. Festival of the Arts and the artwork itself is intended as a legacy to the citizens of the District of North Vancouver. The budget for the artwork is $65,000. inclusive of all artist fees and installation costs and a small budget is available for development ofmodels by sho1listed artists. An Artist Selection Committee-- consisting of District staff, municipal Councillor, artists, the building renovation architect and representatives of the public--is being formed with the mandate to select an artist and to recommend a concept for artwork for the atrium of the Municipal Hall. A detailed information package is available for any artist wishing to submit a proposal. Any practicing professional artist is eligible to apply for this commission. Artists residing on the North Shore are particularly encouraged to apply for this commission. Other interested parties (e.g., architects, Christmas? Already? Artists and craftspeople are asked to submit three original works to the Seymour Art Gallery on Saturday, September24th. between lOam and noon. Works should be suitable for sale in the third annual Christmas Cornucopia of Creative Gifts. The sale is sponsored by the Treasure Cove Artist's Co-op and runs December 2-4.
